MIRA collects MVR 2.05 billion in May 2026

13 Jul 2026

MIRA collected a total of MVR 2.05 billion in revenue during May 2026. This amount was 0.3% lower than the revenue projected for the month and 5.8% lower than the revenue collected in May 2025.

The main reason revenue fell below the projected amount was lower-than-expected collections from GST and Green Tax in the non-tourism sector, as well as reduced income from resort rent and court fees. In addition, ongoing instability in the Middle East contributed to a 4.4% decline in tourist arrivals compared with May 2025, which reduced revenue from tourism-related taxes and fees. MIRA also noted that 13.8% of the revenue collected during the month came from the settlement of outstanding dues from previous periods, while an additional 21.9% resulted from efforts to recover unpaid taxes and other outstanding payments.

Compared with May 2025, the decline in revenue was mainly due to lower collections from Tourism GST, Green Tax, and the Airport Development Fee (ADF). Revenue from tourism-related sources decreased by 19.5%, reflecting the drop in tourist arrivals. Revenue collected through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Fee was also lower than during the same period in the previous year.

As part of its enforcement and debt recovery efforts, MIRA recovered a total of MVR 382 million in outstanding payments during May 2026. These recoveries were achieved through notices issued to taxpayers, dues clearance procedures, installment payment agreements, reminder phone calls, and enforcement under the Action Policy.

The largest source of revenue in May 2026 was Goods and Services Tax (GST), which accounted for 56.3% of total revenue, amounting to approximately MVR 1.1 billion. The second-largest source was Income Tax, contributing 11.4% or MVR 234 million. Other significant sources of revenue included the Airport Development Fee (MVR 158 million), Departure Tax (MVR 156 million), Green Tax (MVR 139 million), and Work Permit Fee (MVR 71 million).

The total revenue collected during the month also included USD 89 million.
